Junior Coach, Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Camps: 2018-1797

The Position:

Reporting to the Site Leader, a Junior Coach at Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Camps is responsible for the safety, enjoyment, and development of every Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Camps ballplayer under their care. Our Junior Coaches provide their ballplayers with guidance and instruction throughout the camp day, always encouraging a respectful and positive atmosphere so that each child experiences success while at camp. Junior Coaches must possess the ability to communicate with a variety of age, interest, and skill levels and must possess a deep knowledge of and enthusiasm for baseball while approaching each day and its unique challenges with energy, patience, and a sense of humor.

July 9th – Millennium Park, Bethel Park, PA

July 16th – Shady Side Academy, Fox Chapel, PA

July 23rd  – The Ellis School, Shadyside, PA

July 30th – McCandles Athletic Association, McCandles, PA

The Work:

Pre-Camp Season

  • Attend coach trainings in the late spring/early summer.
  • Participate in all required webinars and online trainings.
  • Master the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Camps curriculum and other materials, offering feedback and adjustments that will improve the program.
  • Submit all required paperwork on time.

Camp Season

  • Execute the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Camps baseball curriculum, schedules, policies, and safety protocols with high energy, integrity, and passion.
  • Oversee and coordinate daily baseball instruction – including drills, skill development activities, and games – in a manner that maximizes learning and participation for every ballplayer.
  • On stadium visit days, lead ballplayers throughout the VIP tour and player meet-and-greet, employing individual and group behavior management techniques to ensure the safety, well-being and enjoyment of program participants.
  • Build strong connections with ballplayers and fellow team members, taking personal responsibility for the enjoyment and development of all program participants.
  • Serve as a role model for ballplayers and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, respectful communication, appropriate attire and grooming, and a diligent work ethic.
  • Evaluate ballplayer skills and provide feedback to parents as requested by leadership.
  • Work as part of a team to foster a safe, fun, and supportive camp environment grounded upon Headfirst Professional Sports Camps’ mission and values.
  • Implement Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Camps’ traditions, games, policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Maintain enthusiasm and focus throughout busy days during which require participation in every aspect of programming.
  • Play a vital role in the efficiency and safety of camper drop-off and pick-up.
  • Communicate respectfully, clearly, and kindly with all members of the Headfirst Professional Sports Camps community, including camp leadership, fellow team members, ballplayers, and ballplayers' families.
  • Prepare, organize, and set up/take down all programming areas as requested by leadership.
  • Work in all weather conditions.
  • Take responsibility for ballplayers’ belongings throughout camp day, holding items for safekeeping when necessary.
  • Meet Headfirst Professional Sports Camps’ dress code and appearance requirements.
  • Call or meet with parents as requested by the Site Leader and/or HQ in order to provide customer connection and relay important information on ballplayer experience.
  • Participate in all required in-season trainings, webinars, and team meetings.
  • Attend any special events as assigned, interacting with families and assisting with set up/clean up.
  • Report any issue, question, or concern regarding ballplayers promptly to the Site Leader; notify appropriate leadership immediately of any evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical conditions, individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances around ballplayers, or any other potentially dangerous conditions or situations.
  • Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior in working with ballplayers, ballplayer families, fellow team members, leadership, and facility partners while upholding the Headfirst Professional Sports Camps core values at all times.
  • Adhere to state law, Headfirst Professional Sports Camps policies and procedures, and contractual obligations.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as assigned by the Headfirst Professional Sports Camps leadership team and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.

The Requirements:

  • At least 16 years of age.
  • High school student or graduate who will be less than one full year out of high school in Summer 2018 (if you will be more than one full year out of high school in Summer 2018, please apply to our Coach position).
  • Experience playing baseball/softball at high school and/or on a club team.
  • Preferred: Experience coaching or working with children.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully at all times and in all situations.
  • Ability to work well with a variety of age, interest, skill, and developmental levels.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement, follow instructions, and properly implement Headfirst processes and policies in order to ensure the safety and emotional well-being of campers and team members.
  • Ability to successfully complete a background check subject to applicable law.
